Tell us a little about yourself. SARA : I’m an artist and freelance stylist based in Montreal. ALICIA : I’m an artist based between Tel Aviv and New York, from Montreal.
How did you guys meet? SARA : Through a mutual friend, 3 years ago at Alicias art show. When we met, I think I was really jealous of her. She’s very good at art and I was inspired, but I’m a mean girl so you know, but we’ve moved past that. ALICIA : I still feel that way. Jealous every day.
How does fashion influence your art? SARA : We’re both obsessed with the idea of collecting logos and brands out of context. Remixing them and stuffing different brands together. Subconsciously, if I see a logo somewhere very out of context, I’ll take a picture of it. I think a lot of people our age kind of feel the same way. ALICIA : Whenever I look for subjects to photograph, I get attracted to people wearing brands out of context, logos, things that remind me of stuff. It’s also a way to start a conversation with someone. You want to know where they got it from and why it’s different.
What are some cool projects that you’ve worked on? ALICIA : I just finished designing this wallpaper for this group show in Milan which was about paying homage to these great ladies who were resisting over the years. SARA : We did a project to keep in touch. A pen-pal thing where she and I would send each other cell phone pictures, very spontaneous photos when she was in Israel and I would send them from here. I would edit her batch and she would edit mine. It was kind of like sending letters but only visual. Just like a broken telephone you pick up what you see subjectively.
What does multi mean to you? ALICIA : A lot of people gathering in a space. Diversity. SARA : Multiple backgrounds and personalities coming together and resisting and having empathy for each other. Being in this together. It’s intersectional and inclusive.
