MY HAIR IS ART
Hair is one of the unique ways people express their individuality. How we style, cut, colour, and care for it undoubtedly communicates something about us to others. For many communities, it goes beyond practicality and aesthetics; it’s a glimpse into the culture, traditions, and techniques passed down over time. This is particularly true for black hair as it encompasses all of these elements. Although mainstream culture has had no issues utilizing these looks, there is still so much misinformation and stigma around the hair, the hairdos and the people who sport them. Yodit Michele, a.k.a. YOYO, is a hairdresser who uses her artistry, skill, and knowledge daily to create hairstyles rooted in form and function. For her first show titled “MY HAIR IS ART“, she aimed to push herself creatively while showcasing the beauty and power of black hair and how it can be transformed to tell a story and stretch the imagination. THE ART EXHIBITION SHOWCASED BLACK HAIRDOS AS ARTWORKS BECAUSE QUITE FRANKLY, IT REQUIRES THE SAME TECHNIQUE, CREATIVITY AND VISION AS ANY OTHER MEDIUM. All profits from the evening are donated to The Crown Project, a Montreal-based organization that assists under-resourced youth in reaching their full potential through various initiatives. THANK YOU TO YOYO AND LA RUE INSPIRE FOR THIS PRECIOUS PROJECT! |
