MEET SHAH FRANK
Made in Haiti, born in Brooklyn and built in Montreal, SHAH FRANK is breathing new life into the Montreal music scene and beyond. The R&B artist’s voice teeters between raw tones and fluttering falsettos, leaving listeners with “Who is that?" awe. With a creative boldness reminiscent of Aaliyah and the spunk of a young TLC, SHAH FRANK is more than music. She’s creating her own universe, a new frequency. Make sure you listen to her latest single “Ride or Die” to capture a sound that is as vulnerable as it is entrancing.

SHAH FRANK is R&B’s new “Ride or Die”
How would you describe your art? Artists, we always have the hardest time explaining what it is that we do. I actually had to ask a friend for this one. He described me as a hybrid. So, if artsy underground music and mainstream music could have a baby, that would be me. I absolutely loved his answer and will describe my art as such from now on!
Talk to us about your creative process. Early in the morning, I like to write after meditating either facing a window or outside when it’s nice. There’s also late at night where I like to lock myself inside of the car, blast the music and with my pen, my composition book and my phone (for precious voice notes) I go at it for hours.
What is inspiring you right now? The musicians and producers I work with. Sometimes we’ll be at the studio and I’ll just lay on the floor watching them play. Once I’m soaked into the energy that fills the room then it’s easy for me to roll with them. But honestly, I get easily inspired by anything and everything around me all.the.time ! I’m a sponge. |

Can you talk to us about your next project? Ride or Die is the first single off of my upcoming EP. I love this song and I’m proud of the way it sounds. People say it’s a fusion of R&B and Funk with an added zest California love. I was very lucky as an upcoming artist to have Imposs and Vnce Carter, two of Montreal’s heavy-hitters, work on the track with me. They brought it to a whole other level and the musicians did an amazing job. To me, Ride or Die is the perfect introduction to who I am.
What are your go-to shoes? My Chuck Taylors, the black leather edition with the white part dusty (if you’re a real one, you know why!). They’re so comfortable and literally go with every outfit. You can play ball with them, you can walk under the rain with them and they last forever. A great investment! Photos courtesy of Chantelle Fromager, Sabiha Merabet & Peter Graham |
