Art : From Another Perspective
How would you describe your art? As with any artist, my work is an amalgamation of life experiences put out into the world for all to see (for better or worse). I have a background in design and architecture that definitely informs the feel and composition of my art. More specifically, it influences how I manipulate space, form, and tension when switching between 2D and three 3D representation. Often times the art is more than a graphic pattern or abstraction and there are layers of site specific meaning ingrained in the piece. At the end of the day I just want to make an image that I find pleasant to look at multiple times and maybe other people will too.
How does your art allow you to express yourself? I think art is one of the few things that is total expression of oneself! My personality feels totally vulnerable when people look at my art and I really cherish that moment. It is almost as expressive as you can be, you’re saying “Hey look at what I, and only I did! Isn’t it great?!” Or maybe it is just okay but that is fine too as long as you like it, that is the whole point of the art.
Where do you find inspiration? Most of what I do has been informed by graphic design and certain Bauhaus teachers: Anni Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Laszlo Maholy-Nagy, etc. I take the core concepts they provided along with some basic principles of design, and run away with both to create something uniquely my own. It’s not to say this is the only thing I learn from, but it is definitely part of it. Alternatively, I have been just as inspired by seeing everyday items like a bendy straw on a yard long Daiquiri in Las Vegas. |
What is your go to shoe? My current go to is the New Balance Trailbuster. I had an older version and it felt like the perfect Pacific Northwest shoe, blending outdoor performance with street style in odd color-ways. Definitely my jam. Instagram: Sam Wood Wilson |
