A girlboss and her global sound.
Afro-Latinx Jazz, bruk and Afrofuturism. Talk to us about your creative process. I’m a vinyl head. If I’m sad, if I’m happy, if I’m in love and on all my trips around the world. I go to the record shop to find any solutions or inspiration. I listen to music on repeat a lot, that’s my way to study the layers and all that. People say it’s a Capricorn thing. I dance a lot when I make music or prepare for a DJ set. There’s always a teapot next to my home setup or in the studio. What is inspiring you right now? I’m inspired by my friends: Eva, Célia, Alida, Peggy, Eunice, Julio, Elyssa, Pauline et Stan. Musically, it’s the musicians such as Seven Davis Jr, Viktor Duplaix, Jill Scott, Kaidi Tatham, Airto Moreira et Moodyman. The ”California Dreaming” cover from Eddie Hazel is on repeat as I’m writing this. Basically, Brazilian Jazz, Brazilian Psychedelic Rock from the 70s, Future Soul, Drum & Bass, Rai, UK Garage, House and Broken Beat. Too much stuff well if you heard me DJ you know. I’m a film school kid so, of course, cinema inspires me ’cause one day I’ll make the soundtrack of my own indie film. The TV show Small Axe was inspiring for me. I’ve watched the episode Lovers Rock 7x in a week. The movies Suspiria (2018), Orfeu Negro (1959), Crooklyn (1994) too. I don’t even have a music video yet (laugh). |

What is bringing you joy right now? I’d say a BBQ with my friends in a remote place, maybe my backyard. That makes me happy. Also, most of my crew is in Europe so, I wish I could go back ASAP. Listening to an album played down on the floor with my fairy godmother Jean Guy is some simple pleasure I love. Can you talk to us about your latest/next project? My debut EP ”No Toning Down” is coming out in September. After 10 years in music, 8 years as a DJ that’s my loud and soft scream to the world. Generally, I accumulate emotions for years and I decided to make this EP rather than therapy. It’s my way of reclaiming my space and calling all Black Women & Femmes to do the same. What are your go-to shoes? I like shoes I can remove easily. Personally, I love not wearing shoes and walk barefoot in my house and in the backyard even if it’s winter. I feel more grounded or call it being a hippie at heart. Otherwise, I like wearing classic skate shoes like Vans Old Skool. They have to be a lil bit dirty for me to like them. I never bought any ”Hip Hop” sneakers. That’s my wanna-be sk8 past life. Keep up with Gayance here |
