Have a dreamy summer with Estyr
How would you describe your art? Introspective and chill, with some nostalgia and catharsis. A chill summer morning at home. Like a soundtrack for coming home to yourself and getting in your feelings.
Talk to us about your creative process. I get song ideas when I’m biking. Other times songs start with a beat from a producer and evolve over email. (I haven’t been in a “real” studio for a year and a half!) I can never sit down and finish something from start to finish. I work on things and let them rest, do other things, and return back. It’s very touch and go.
What is inspiring you right now? I’ve been pulling a lot from growing up in the suburbs. In the early 2000s, I was stuck at home flipping 5 channels of public television or playing Tetris or talking to my crushes on MSN messenger. I moved to the suburbs from North York and at the time my subdivision didn’t have lawns or finished sidewalks. The world felt “out there”far away. The pandemic is the first time I’ve been stuck at home like I was in my teens before I learned how to drive. When my world is small like that it pushes me into dreaming and introspection. Boredom is a muse I guess.
Can you talk to us about your latest project? I just dropped an EP called “All Tied Up” on May 11th. The songs are inspired by 90s soft rock and my coming-of-age. The project is like something I’ve always wanted to make but never knew how to. The music will also appear in the film “Altar Boy” (to be released late 2021) made by my partner and collaborator Serville Poblete. |
What is bringing you joy right now? The Las Culturistas podcast, Gardein crispy tenders, public parks, my budgeting app and learning about urban pigeon rescue.
What are your go-to shoes? I like a velcro sandal with a white crew sock. Convenience and warmth, all-in-one. Also a big fan of the lilac foam slides I got from Chinatown last spring. Keep up with Estyr here here. |
