Catherine Potvin, a multidisciplinary designer and illustrator
Her thin, clean, geometric lines explore the obviousness of things and explicit forms. Constantly inspired by her surroundings, Catherine’s style is always evolving and never ceases to amaze. In fact, if you’ve ever walked around Montreal, you’ve probably come across one of her works. We chatted with her to learn more about herself and her art.
How would you describe your art?
I would say that it’s playful with a touch of modernity. My lines are direct and my work is usually clean. Sometimes it’s abstract but it’s always accessible. I usually go for simplicity and efficiency. Style-wise, it’s somewhere between high fashion and daycare.
How does your art allow you to express yourself?
I’ve always reflected in a very conceptual way. It can lead to a funky way of communicating because my approach is usually suggestive, and I don’t pay much attention to details. In a sense, illustration is the perfect way of expressing an abstract or complex concept because drawing is kind of like writing a punchline. It’s direct, and you can understand a lot with little.
Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere around me, really. I think that we initially have to let ourselves be inspired and stay open. The key is to really stay stimulated so that our ideas are renewed and can evolve. It’s also important to stay active and to nurture our curiosity. We are inevitably influenced by our environment so why shouldn’t we build one that’s fun? I’m also lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible talent and positive human beings. That’s the secret.
What is your go-to shoe?
I’m naturally an energetic person so I have a tendency to go off-road. I need sturdiness, comfort and something that stands out. Basically, if my shoes were a car, they would be a nice 4X4.
